Duties: Provides ASL/English interpreting on a specialty Deaf psychiatric inpatient unit at Worcester State Hospital. Interprets for deaf and hearing staff in multiple venues; team meetings, case conferences, psychiatric and medical evaluations, staff trainings, etc. Provides consultation on communication and language issues. Assists in translating ASL communications into written English. Provides education regarding interpreting role and ethics. Performs other related duties as assigned.

Qualifications:
MINIMUM ENTRANCE REQUIREMENTS:

REQUIRED WORK EXPERIENCE: At least two years of full-time, or equivalent part-time, professional experience providing interpretation and/or transliteration services for the Deaf and Hard of Hearing population after successful completion of the Massachusetts Commission for the Deaf and Hard of Hearing Screening.

SUBSTITUTIONS:
- An Associate's or higher degree in Interpreter Studies may be substituted for the required experience on the basis of one year of education for one year of experience.

- One year of education equals 30 semester hours. Education toward a degree will be prorated on the basis of the proportion of the requirements actually completed.

- A certificate as evidence of completion of a two-year Interpreter Training Program may be substituted for the required experience.

- Certification by the National Registry of Interpreters for the Deaf, Inc. or other interpreter certification judged equivalent by the Massachusetts Commission for the Deaf and Hard of Hearing may be substituted for the required experience.

LICENSES:
- Successful completion of the Massachusetts Commission for the Deaf and Hard of Hearing Screening is required.

- Based on assignment, travel may be required. Those employees who elect to use a motor vehicle for travel must have a current and valid Massachusetts Class D Motor Vehicle Operator's license or the equivalent from another state.

Preferred Qualifications:
National Registry of the Deaf certification preferred.

Located on over 100 acres in Worcester, Massachusetts, Worcester State Hospital (WSH) is part of an integrated network of effective, efficient and culturally competent mental health services. It provides intermediate and long-term inpatient care for individuals with serious and persistent mental illness who live in the Central and Western Massachusetts Areas, as well as individuals requiring specialized court ordered evaluations.

WSH is accredited by The Joint Commission and certified by the Centers for Medicare and Medicaid Services (CMS).

While WSH provides inpatient services to 166 patients (136 Adult and 30 Child/Adolescent), it is also home for an Intensive Residential Treatment Program (IRTP), a Behavioral Intensive Residential Treatment Program (BIRT), both operated by the University of Massachusetts Medical School, the UMass Department of Psychiatry Research Unit, an Acute Inpatient Program, managed by the UMass Memorial Hospital, and the Irving and Betty Brudnick Neuropsychiatric Research Institute and the Center for Comparative Imaging.

This is a Civil Service position.
This position is part-time, 20 hrs. per week. Scheduled work days/hours are: Monday and Friday 10:00 a.m - 6:30 p.m. and Thursday 2:00 p.m. - 6:00 p.m. Days off are Sunday/Tuesday/Wednesday and Saturday.

The American School for the Deaf (ASD) is located on a 54 acre campus in West Hartford , Connecticut .  It is a residential and day program operating as a state-aided private school.  It was established in 1817 as the first permanent school for the deaf in America .  The current service load is approximately 215.  The program is a comprehensive center-based and community-based educational program serving deaf and hard-of-hearing students from preschool through high school, and adult service program, utilizing a total communication philosophy.  The American School for the Deaf is accredited by the Conference of Educational Administrators of Schools and Programs Serving the Deaf and the Departments of Education in Connecticut and Massachusetts .  

SCOPE OF DUTIES
Under the supervision of the Director of Outreach Educational Services, provides educational interpreting services in the general education classroom.
 

SCHEDULE:
Monday - Friday
12:30 pm – 2:30 pm
 

PRIMARY DUTIES
Under the supervision of the Director of Outreach Educational Services:
 

(a)    Participates, implements, and evaluates I.E.P’s in communication for deaf and hard of hearing children and youth for both group and individual work.

(b)    Integrates work with o the r department programs; works with teachers.

(c)    Gives special attention to instruction to children with hearing loss, especially those using interpreting services in the areas of sign language/oral/aural communication skills.

(d)    Confers with school administrators, professional colleagues and parents concerning the program development and the overall communication needs of children. 

(e)    Works with teaching staff in integrating sign language, speech, and auditory training into classroom course context. 

(f)      Prepares lesson plans for the teaching of sign language and reports as required.

(g)    Participates in student staffings, staff meetings, curricular project meetings, and staff development activities; functions as a member of the educational team. 

(h)    Maintains records and does o the r related work as required.

(i)      O the r related duties as assigned.

MINIMUM REQUIREMENTS
Bachelor Degree is desired.  Applicants must have successfully completed significant coursework pertaining specifically to the development and implementation of educational interpreting utilizing various communication skills for deaf and hard of hearing students.  Professional experience in the provision of such direct services is highly desirable.  SCPI Level of Advanced.  Interpreter Certification required: Registry of Interpreters for the Deaf (RID): CI, CT, CI/CT or CSC or National Association of the Deaf (NAD): Level IV/ V.  Ability to work in a collaborative setting.  

SALARY AND BENEFITS 
Compensation range is specified by education/certification and relevant experience.
