RID Local Test Administrators

The role of the Local Test Administrator (LTA) is crucial to the success and vitality of the entire RID National Testing System.  We are seeking individuals highly dedicated to the interpreting profession with the capability to share their time for the growth of the profession.
 
Consider becoming an LTA if you are willing to:
 
Commit time to administering the exams two or three times a year
Adhere to the guidelines for RID agents
Follow security and confidentiality measures
 

Requirements:
 
Prospective LTAs should already be certified and/or have no future plans to take interpreter
certification exams. 
 

To apply to become an LTA:
 
Request an application packet from the National Testing System
Submit the completed forms along with the following:
A letter identifying your reasons for wanting to become an LTA
A letter of recommendation from the site coordinator
A current résumé
 
 
LTA applications that include all the requested information will be submitted at the next scheduled meeting to the NAD-RID Certification Council, which is responsible for approving LTA's.  LTA's are
paid

  The Administrative Assistant/Staff Interpreter will coordinate and help manage the budget and budget process for the American Sign Language Program, including processing hiring, purchasing, and payroll forms. SUMMARY:

The School Interpreter has responsibility of supporting the school-wide interpreting needs of the deaf students and deaf faculty. This person will sign language (ASL) interpret for deaf students working in vocational community placements, teach deaf students on the practical and functional uses of an interpreter across a wide-range of settings, and assist during educational meetings and other school-wide events and functions where interpreting is needed. 

DUTIES AND RESPONSIBILITIES:

The School Interpreter has primary responsibility for supporting staff with school-wide interpreting, as such will provide the following: 

  1. Interpret for deaf students working in a range vocational community placements and settings to help bridge the communication gaps between their own language needs and those of their employers.
  2. Help create a more independent work setting for those students completing job trials by assisting with interpreting needs. 
  3. Support the academic needs of students through the communication process within classroom or on campus.
  4. Work collaboratively with classroom teachers and other professional staff to assist the with the students' transition from a total communication model to a bilingual approach. 
  5. Provide "educational interpreting" services in classrooms as students practice using an educational interpreter in the classroom setting or in the community. 
  6. Provide interpreting services during classroom-wide or school-wide field trips.
  7. Provide interpreting services for in-services, IEP meetings, monthly board meetings, or any other BSD related meeting where interpreting services are necessary.
  8. Supports student mastery of ASL usage across settings and various accessibility areas to increase independence upon graduation. 
  9. Maintains own professional skills through appropriate development opportunities both in-house and through outside conferences and trainings.
  10. Participates in the accomplishment of institutional goals/objectives and overall mission by engagement in committees, task forces, or work groups. 
  11. Performs miscellaneous job-related duties as assigned by faculty/staff.

MINIMUM JOB REQUIREMENTS:

Interpreter Certification from an accredited agency with a minimum of a CI (Certificate of Interpretation) certificate. Adherence to code of ethics. 
 

PREFERRED QUALIFICATION:

Possession of a National RID certification or have passed a screening by MCDHH and are on their approved list of interpreters. CI and CT certificate preferred. Must follow the RID or NAD code of ethics. 

Coursework in education, Deaf education, and communication disorders.  Previous successful interpreting experience. Demonstrate ability to respect diversity and help children develop a positive self-image as successful learners.

KNOWLEDGE, SKILLS, AND ABILITIES REQUIRED:

  • Ability to communicate effectively, both orally, in writing, and fluent sign.
  • Ability to understand and follow safety procedures.
  • Ability to provide a supportive and caring environment for students.
  • Ability to understand and follow specific instructions and procedures.
  • Ability to oversee activities for children that encourage healthy growth.
  • Ability to receive professional direction, learn new skills, and work in a team setting.
  • Limited student supervision skills.

CONDITIONS OF EMPLOYMENT:

  • Successful candidate must submit to post offer.

WORKING CONDITIONS AND PHYSICAL EFFORT:

  • Work involves moderate exposure to a variety of safety elements, including moderate physical activity, student behavior, student hygiene, and limited food preparation.
  • The environment may require physically assisting students with a weight, up to and in excess of 50 pounds 
  • Work environment may involve operation of school vehicles in the transportation of students to and from community settings.

DHIS is seeking a Call Center Manager for its Manhattan based VRS Call Center. This position manages the operation of the VRS call center and call center employees. The Call Center Manager is responsible for all aspects of training sign language interpreters as Video Interpreters for DHIS, including coaching and mentoring current interpreters, developing and implementing ongoing training processes and procedures, creating and maintaining employee work schedules to guarantee sufficient phone coverage during times of operation, and to that end, maintaining a working knowledge of call volume, booth occupancy/minute ratios and providing daily/weekly/monthly/annual reports. Holds staff meetings on a regular basis to ensure effective communication in the office, learn and master the VRS interpreter software application, manages the employee rating and evaluation process, ensures all employees abide by company and FCC polices, rules and regulations, manages the VRS center and its expenditures within the guidelines of the established budget.
