SignTalk Presents Workshop:
Helping Interpreters Overcome the Challenges Presented by Idioms

Idioms – a group of words such as “raining cats and dogs” or “building a nest egg” – have meanings that are not necessarily clear from the individual words that form them. They can present a special challenge to sign language interpreters.

Try to simply convey the words that form the idiom and the meaning of the idiom may become hopelessly unclear. If the receiver is Deaf and their first language is ASL, the interpreter will attempt to provide ASL access until the point that an idiom is used. But, as is often the case, if the interpreter then reverts to the receiver’s second language to convey the idiom, the speaker’s intention may be lost.

What’s an interpreter to do?

Join SignTalk on Saturday, March 31, in New York for a special professional development workshop – “Idioms: Do You See What I’m Saying?” –  that will explore the special challenges of interpreting idioms and offer suggestions for interpreters who want to successfully navigate them. The workshop will be held from 9 a.m. to 4 p.m. at the Hotel Pennsylvania, 407 7th Avenue, New York, NY. The cost is $115. Interpreters will earn 0.6 CEUs for attending this workshop.

Workshop participants will learn how to:

The workshop will be led by the engaging Windell “Wink” Smith Jr.,  a nationally prominent presenter and weekly ASL Radio/Video program host whose workshops often blend comedy and drama. Wink holds an NIC (National Interpreter Certification) Master from the Registry of Interpreters for the Deaf. The former director of outreach and video communications for Sign Language Resource Services, Inc. (SLRS), Wink developed the SLRS video remote interpreting program (VRI), which includes designing a completely new VRI module. He co-founded and served as volunteer CEO for a newly founded not-for-profit organization known as Project N.A.D.I.N.E. (National Advocates on Deafness to Inform, Network and Enrich). In 2009, he was elected to serve as parliamentarian for the Oklahoma RID chapter and later became chapter vice president.
