SignTalk Presents Workshop:
Helping Interpreters Overcome the Challenges Presented by Idioms
Try to simply convey the words that form the idiom and the meaning of the idiom may become hopelessly unclear. If the receiver is Deaf and their first language is ASL, the interpreter will attempt to provide ASL access until the point that an idiom is used. But, as is often the case, if the interpreter then reverts to the receiver’s second language to convey the idiom, the speaker’s intention may be lost.
What’s an interpreter to do?
Join SignTalk on Saturday, March 31, in
New York for a special professional development workshop – “Idioms: Do You See
What I’m Saying?” – that will explore the special challenges of
interpreting idioms and offer suggestions for interpreters who want to
successfully navigate them. The workshop will be held from 9 a.m. to 4 p.m. at
the Hotel Pennsylvania, 407 7th Avenue, New York, NY. The cost is $115.
Interpreters will earn 0.6 CEUs for attending this workshop.
Workshop participants will learn how to:
