Interpreting in Jewish Settings Presented by: EJ COHEN, M.A., M.Ed., CI, CT Sponsored by: Connecticut Registry of Interpreters for the Deaf Education Level: Introductory, Intermediate Target Audience: This workshop is intended for Deaf and hearing working interpreters, mentees, novice interpreters, and interpreter preparation students. Description: Interpreting in religious environments can require a lot of preparatory work, with the specific terms used in each setting, as well as becoming familiar with rituals and customs. EJ Cohen has been involved with Jewish education since early childhood, and became a tutor in her own synagogue at the age of 14. She has combined her love of Judaica (all things Jewish) with her love of sign language and has prepared 8 Deaf students for their Bar/Bat Mitzvah (rite of passage for Jewish teens age 13 and up). Her 2 masters degrees are in Deaf Education (1980) and Jewish Education (2005) and she has traveled throughout the US and England, interpreting at various Jewish life cycle events. She has presented workshops on signing in Jewish settings to hearing people (annual Coalition for the Advancement of Jewish Education conferences), and to interpreters (northern CA, London, England). Her humour and knowledge combine to provide a fascinating workshop, teaching the subleties and nuances as well as practical knowledge when in a Jewish environment. When and Where: Tuesday, May 27, 2008, 6:30 – 9 pm Congregation Kol Haverim, 1079 Hebron Avenue, Glastonbury, CT 06033
