The Connecticut Mentorship Program

There are two options within this professional development program:  the One-on-One Mentorship Program and the Group Mentorship Program.

One-on-One Mentorship Program

Goal:

To insure deaf and hearing people in Connecticut will have ongoing access to quality interpreting services.

Objectives:

  • To pair mentors with mentees for one-on-one learning experiences
  • To provide workshops focused on the interpreting process and skill development presented by qualified members of the interpreting Community

Program Admittance Requirements

For Mentees:

  • Completed registration and application form, a video demonstrating your skills (voicing and signing);
  • Graduated from an accredited IPP or a CODA able to document 250 hours of employment as an interpreter;
  • The commitment to having several meetings with your mentor per month;
  • Registered with the State of Connecticut (as per the Connecticut State Statute).

 For Mentors:

  • Completed training on “How to Mentor” or an equivalent model;
  • Certified: NIC, CSC,CI, CT, IC, TC or NAD Level IV,V;
  • Must work at least 10 or more hours per week;
  • Must be able to have several meetings per month with your mentee;
  • Must have at least 5 years of experience in the interpreting profession with certification;
  • Registered with the State of Connecticut (as per the Connecticut State Statute).

 Program: (Design your own)

  • The pre-acceptance meeting (7/9/07)  will provide the opportunity for mentees to decide on program enrollment, program design, and to provide payment (then on to Kick-off night);
  • Participants will decide how many mentoring sessions they would like and what time frame they would like to mentor in (ex: 8 mentoring sessions from September to January)
  • Participants will choose which workshops they would like to attend (workshops may fall outside of your mentoring cycle);
  • The mentor will be responsible to expose their mentee to a variety of appropriate assignments (this may be either observational or hands-on experience).

HOW TO START

Once you have been accepted into the one-on-one program, you will be required to attend an informational meeting at CDHI on July 9, 2007 and the Kick-off night at the American School for the Deaf in the GAA room on 9/14/07 from 6-9p.

Now that you are registered, you will choose which workshops you would like to attend.  This year’s options are:

Educational Interpreting: The Laws and Implications by Mary Sue Owens 9/21/07

Educational Interpreting: The “Team Approach” by Mary Sue Owens 10/19/07

Educational Interpreting: EIPA (RID), what is it? by Mary Sue Owens 11/16/07

Ethical Decision-Making for Interpreters by Kellie Stewart 3/29/08

Introductory Voicing Skills  by Kate Gavigan Spring - TBA

Mentor's Toolbox by Alonna Lamb-Sedgwick 5/2 & 3, 2008

The Set-up:

The mentor and mentee will decide how to best utilize their time together.  It will be your responsibility to follow up with your mentor to ensure that you are capitalizing on every opportunity.  Knowing that most people have busy schedules you may also want to use email, telephone, videotaping, and journaling to maximize contact with your mentor.  Other suggestions are: going with your mentor to the site to observe or work, bringing your mentor to your site, meeting offsite to work with videotapes, videotaping yourself at work and reviewing it together. You are responsible for keeping all meetings with each other.

The Cost:

This will depend on your program preference.  Your own professional development needs will guide your decision as to how many sessions to have and for how many months.  Each mentoring session will be $15.00; workshops prices are on the registration form.  Enclosed are the workshop schedule, registration form, and application form.  Participants are accepted on a first come/ first served basis provided all requirements are met.  Interpreters do not have to be in the mentorship program to attend the workshops.
