Member-At-Large: Dorothy Cennamo-Walllis Dorothy started to learn sign language when she was hired to work in a residential facility where there was one deaf resident. No one on staff knew sign language, so she bought a book and started teaching herself. She had no idea she was coding English until she switched jobs and met a coworker who was deaf. The coworker signed with her at work, became friends, and introduced Dorothy to the Deaf community. That is when she recognized ASL as a language and learned about Deaf culture. People she met in the Deaf Community were the ones who urged her to become an interpreter. Six years later she had her first job interpreting. She loved it and has never looked back. Dorothy has been interpreting for 23 years in a variety of settings, primarily post-secondary and medical. For the first 17 years she was strictly a freelance interpreter.
